WELCOME TO KOMATI WOMEN FOUNDATION

WHAT'S HAPPENING

South Africa is a land bursting with opportunities. Inspired by the philosophy of Ubuntu, it has the potential to be a world leader - through the active and effective participation of its people. The country’s current focus is skills development and training. With a holistic approach to education, skills development can be the driving force towards growth.

To be truly free requires knowledge. Komati Foundation Women’s development promotes cultural, social and professional programmes that empower the South African woman with the skills and learning to bring about change in her community.

WHO WE ARE
OUR HISTORY Founded in Johannesburg, in 1999, Komati Foundation Women’s development (KWFD) is a special committee of Komati Foundation. It is a non-profit organisation actively working to transform South Africa society in the fields of education, human development and social welfare. African women are without doubt one of the moving forces of the continent. For this reason the promotion of women is a priority. The training of women leaders is especially urgent in South Africa, where women have been (and still are) in an inferior situation with regards to labor, social and family issues. Adapting similar and successful, proven programs from other countries, Komati Foundation Women’s development aims to engender in female learners and young professionals a lasting commitment to both personal and social development, thereby creating a virtuous circle of transformation with real medium and long-term benefits to society. The work of the Foundation is open to all persons without regard for race, gender, creed or culture.
VISION That every South African woman be committed to her personal development, and so also the development of her community. MISSION We RUN programmes that FOSTER VALUES and empower women to be leaders at every level of society: in their families, at work and their communities.
VALUES INTEGRITY: awareness of who we are and want to be, and aiming to express it in every aspect of our lives SERVICE: the realisation that making others happy is the way to be happy STUDY: the desire to learn and grow, in order to keep youthful TEAMWORK: the strengths of one can overcome the weaknesses of the other WORK: if the goals are great, they are worth the effort

WHAT WE DO
WHAT KFWD undertakes to provide education and training that will guide individuals in their personal and professional growth. The projects include social outreach activities, skills training, and short- or long-term leadership and character development programmes. They are aimed at women from all levels of society - regardless of age, creed or race. WHY A condition for genuine freedom is knowledge and human formation. KFWD provides South African women with the knowledge that will empower them to make informed decisions, which will benefit them, their families and their community in the long-term. Our efforts are focused in the following areas:
EDUCATION This programme equips young women from socially disadvantaged backgrounds with technical skills for the hospitality industry, enabling them to access employ- -ment opportunities in the formal sector.
STUDY CENTRES Through its study centres, KFWD aims to raise social awareness and civic responsibility among high school, university and tertiary students. The Study Centres in Johannesburg and Pretoria also carry out educational activities to foster the intellectual and academic excellence of young women.
SOCIAL OUTREACH Generation bonding: KFWD is aware of the duty to look after the vulnerable members of society, whether due to poverty or old age. Many may not be lacking in material comfort, but are very lonely. School Social Projects: Together with volunteers from tertiary institutions, this project offers academic tuition in Mathematics and English and material support to students in New Generation Combined School, (Vlakfontein) and St. Annes Primary School (Atteridgeville). CAMPS Camps are run for young girls during their school holidays. The aim is to reinforce the value of teamwork, time-management, and to interact with people from different backgrounds. In many cases camps give the attendants a chance to contribute towards improving living conditions in rural communities.
LEADERSHIP International Volunteer training: This initiative allows volunteers from overseas to work side by side with local youth, to improve the living standards of rural communities through education about sanitation, basic hygiene and primary health care.
TRAINING VOLUNTEERS KFWD promotes social welfare in South Africa by organizing courses, seminars, study groups and other cultural activities for both adults and children. So far KFWD has organized various programs to form university students in leadership, good citizenship and personal integrity. The aim has been to motivate young people to give back to their community and society as a whole.
